Galar is the British region: tea, trains, football-inspired gym stadiums. Sword and Shield's Galar Pokedex dropped 89 new Pokemon and introduced Dynamax, which turned gym fights into boss battles. The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC added another layer on top. This page lists the complete Galar pokedex in entry order.
About the Galar Pokedex
Galar is the Gen 8 region from Pokemon Sword and Shield on the Switch, with Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC expansions. The Galar Pokedex introduced 89 new Pokemon and was controversial at launch for dropping the National Dex: not every older Pokemon is in the Galar pokedex, only ones Game Freak chose to include. Galarian regional variants (Galarian Ponyta, Galarian Zigzagoon, Galarian Corsola) are new.
Starters in Galar
Galar starters are Grookey (Grass), Scorbunny (Fire), and Sobble (Water). Each starter has a Gigantamax form usable in raid battles.
Legendary Pokemon in Galar
Zacian and Zamazenta are the Galar cover legendaries of Sword and Shield, tied to the Galar kings legend. Eternatus is the post-story boss. Calyrex, Glastrier, Spectrier, Kubfu, and Urshifu arrived via DLC. Regieleki and Regidrago are new Regi variants added in Crown Tundra.
Galar Gym Challenge
Galar Gyms are built as football-stadium boss fights with Dynamax. Gym leaders include Milo (Grass), Nessa (Water), Kabu (Fire), Bea or Allister (Fighting or Ghost, version exclusive), Opal (Fairy), Gordie or Melony (Rock or Ice, version exclusive), Piers (Dark), and Raihan (Dragon). Leon is the Galar Champion.
Completing the Galar Pokedex
A complete Galar pokedex is smaller than national dexes of earlier games since only ~400 Pokemon are in Sword and Shield. The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC expand the Galar dex considerably. Max Raid battles are the main way to farm rare Galar Pokemon and hidden abilities.
