What is Pokemon Wordle?

Pokemon Wordle is a Pokemon name guessing game built on the Wordle format. The answer is the name of one Pokemon, you have 6 tries, and every guess colours each letter to show how close you are. The daily puzzle is the same for everyone and the grid is as long as the name and the length is shown before you start.

Wordle is the word game where you find a hidden five-letter word. Here the hidden word is a Pokemon, and its length changes from day to day. Daily answers are names of 4 to 8 letters, which keeps the grid readable on a phone. The game draws on all 1,025 Pokemon in the Pokepedia data, and any of them is a valid guess if it has the right number of letters.

If you want clues about type, generation, height and weight instead of letters, try Pokedle. It is the other kind of Pokemon guessing game, and it has its own daily puzzle.

How to play Pokemon Wordle

  1. Check the number of letters shown above the grid.
  2. Type a Pokemon name with that many letters, using the on-screen keys or your keyboard.
  3. Press Enter. Each letter turns green, amber or grey.
  4. Use the colours to build the next guess. You win when the whole row is green.

A guess must be a real Pokemon name. Anything else shakes the row and shows the message that no Pokemon has that many letters in that spelling. Letters you type stay editable until you press Enter.

Spaces, dots, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored. Type MRMIME for Mr. Mime.

What the letter colours mean

ColourMeaningExample for Pikachu
GreenThe letter is in the name and in this spot.P in first place
AmberThe letter is in the name, in a different spot.A in the wrong place
GreyThe letter is not in the name, or you already found all its copies.X, which Pikachu does not have

Repeated letters follow the standard Wordle rule. Greens are marked first. Each amber then uses up one remaining copy of that letter in the answer. If you guess EEVEE against a name with a single E, only one E can be coloured and the rest turn grey. The on-screen keyboard shows the best result found for each letter.

Hints, hard mode and the name list

Hints

After 3 wrong guesses you can reveal the generation of the Pokemon and its region. After 5 wrong guesses you can reveal one of its types. Hints are optional, and your share text lists the ones you used.

Hard mode

Hard mode makes you reuse what you have learned. A green letter must stay in its spot and an amber letter must appear in every later guess. Turn it on before your first guess with the Hard mode button. The game remembers your choice.

Show matching names

Tick Show matching names to see a list of Pokemon that fit all the clues so far. Tap a name to place it on the current row. The list is off by default, and turning it on marks the round as assisted in your share text.

Strategy tips

  • Open with a real name that uses common letters. Gengar and Raichu are 6-letter examples with A, R and E or I.
  • Learn the name families. Ivysaur and Venusaur end in SAUR, Charmander and Charmeleon start with CHAR, and Slowpoke and Slowbro share SLOW.
  • Use the generation hint to recall naming habits. Knowing the region narrows the list a lot.
  • Use a guess to test letter positions, not only to hit the answer. A real name you know is wrong can still sort the alphabet for you.
  • Watch repeated letters. If a letter shows amber and grey in the same guess, the answer has exactly the number of copies that were coloured.
  • Check the type chart or the Pokedex when you want to jog your memory. The Pokedex lists every Pokemon by number.

Daily puzzle, unlimited and practice

The daily puzzle changes at midnight in your own time zone. Everyone in the same time zone gets the same Pokemon, and a countdown shows when the next one arrives. If you reload the page, your guesses come back. The daily result goes into your stats: games played, win rate, current streak and best streak, with a bar for each number of tries from 1 to 6 and one for misses.

Unlimited mode picks a random Pokemon whenever you ask. Pick a name length of 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 letters, or leave it on any. You can also limit answers to one generation, such as Kanto or Paldea. These settings are saved. Unlimited rounds never change your daily stats.

The daily view also lists the last 7 puzzles. Open one to play it as practice. Practice rounds are not counted either, so you can miss a day and still try that puzzle.

Pokemon name guessing by length

The number of letters changes how you play. A 4-letter name leaves little room, so the first guess should test where the vowels sit. Ho-Oh plays as HOOH, which shows how repeated letters can shrink a puzzle.

At 5 and 6 letters you have room to test letters and still solve in four or five tries. Pikachu has 7 letters and Mr. Mime has 6 once the dot and the space are removed. At 7 and 8 letters the grid is wide and more names share endings, so positions of the first two letters are the best clue to chase.

Unlimited mode lets you train one length. Pick 8 letters, play a few rounds, and you will start to see which endings and double letters come up often.

Pokemon Wordle compared with Wordle

The rules match the original: 6 tries, three colours, and a share grid with no spoilers. Three things differ. The answer list is Pokemon names only. The word length changes each day instead of staying at five. And a guess has to be a real Pokemon, so you cannot use a random string of letters to test the alphabet.

The last point makes the opening guess matter more. You need a name you know is real, and you need it to be the right length. That is also why the name list option exists for players who want a nudge.

Sharing your result

When a round ends, press Share result. The text has the puzzle number, your tries out of 6, the name length and a grid of coloured squares. No letters appear in the grid. Friends can read your result without seeing the answer. If you used hints or the name list, the text says so.

The Pokemon this game uses

Answers and valid guesses come from the same data as the Pokepedia Pokedex: 1,025 Pokemon, one entry for each base form. Regional forms and Mega Evolutions are separate topics and are not separate answers here. After a round ends you see the sprite and a link to its page, such as Pikachu or Mr. Mime.

Short names are rare. Most Pokemon names run from 6 to 9 letters, so the daily puzzle often has a long name to find. Other Pokepedia games are listed on the Pokemon games page, and the random Pokemon generator is a quick way to meet names you have not seen in a while.

Other guessing games work on the same idea with different clues. Squirdle, for example, compares attributes of each guess. In Pokemon Wordle the clue is the spelling, and the stats play no part.

Pokemon Wordle FAQ

What is Pokemon Wordle?

Pokemon Wordle is a word game where the answer is a Pokemon name. You get 6 tries to guess it, and each guess shows which letters are in the right place, in the name but misplaced, or missing. Names come from all 1,025 Pokemon.

How do you play Pokemon Wordle?

The grid is as wide as the name, and the length is shown above it. Type a Pokemon name with that many letters and press Enter. Green letters are correct, amber letters are in the name in another spot, and grey letters are not in the name. Use the colours to narrow down the name.

Is Pokemon Wordle free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and works in your browser on a phone or a computer. Your stats stay in your own browser.

Can you play Pokemon Wordle more than once a day?

Yes. The daily puzzle is one per day, but Unlimited mode gives you a new Pokemon as often as you like. You can also open the last 7 daily puzzles as practice. Only the daily puzzle counts toward your stats and streak.

How do names with spaces, dots or hyphens work?

Only letters count. Mr. Mime is typed as MRMIME and Ho-Oh as HOOH. A name with a symbol, such as Porygon-Z or Farfetch'd, uses only its letters.

What do the hints show?

After 3 wrong guesses you can reveal the generation and its region. After 5 wrong guesses you can reveal one of the Pokemon's types. Both appear in your share text so friends know you used them.

What does Show matching names do?

It lists the Pokemon names that still fit every clue on the board. It is off by default. If you turn it on, your share text says the round was assisted.

What is hard mode?

In hard mode every clue you have found must be used in your next guess. Green letters stay in their spot and amber letters must appear somewhere in the word. You can switch it on before your first guess.

Can the same letter appear twice in the answer?

Yes. Names such as Eevee and Ditto repeat letters. The colours follow the standard Wordle rule: greens are marked first, then each amber is given only while the answer still has an unmatched copy of that letter.

Is this the same as Pokedle?

No. Pokemon Wordle is about the letters of the name. Pokedle gives you attribute clues such as type and generation for each guess. Both have a daily puzzle.
