What is Pokedle?
Pokedle is a daily Pokemon guessing game in the style of Wordle. A Pokemon is hidden, and you have 8 guesses to name it. Each guess adds a row of tiles that compare your Pokemon to the hidden one by type, generation, evolution stage, colour, shape, height and weight. The puzzle is free and the answer changes every day.
Players also know this style of game as Squirdle. Both names describe the same idea: you do not see letters, you see stats, and you use them to rule Pokemon out. This version covers all 1,025 Pokemon from nine generations, and the data comes from the same records as the Pokepedia Pokedex.
How to play Pokedle
- Type a Pokemon name in the box and pick it from the list.
- Read the row of tiles that appears. Green is an exact match. Amber is close. Grey is wrong.
- Use an arrow to move in the right direction. An up arrow means the hidden Pokemon is higher, a down arrow means lower.
- Guess again with what you learned. Solve it before the 8th guess to keep your streak.
The names you already guessed leave the list, so you cannot waste a guess on a repeat. The counter above the board shows which guess you are on.
What each Pokedle clue means
| Tile | Green | Amber | Arrow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | Same first type | The hidden Pokemon has this type in its second slot | None |
| Type 2 | Same second type, or both have none | The hidden Pokemon has this type in its first slot | None |
| Gen | Same generation | None | Answer is from a later or earlier generation |
| Evo | Same evolution stage | None | Answer is further along or earlier in its evolution line |
| Colour and Shape | Same as the hidden Pokemon | None | None |
| Height and Weight | Exactly the same | None | Answer is taller or shorter, heavier or lighter |
Evolution stage counts the Pokemon's place in its line: stage 1 is a basic Pokemon, stage 2 evolved once and stage 3 evolved twice. A Pokemon with no evolutions is stage 1. You can switch height and weight between metres and kilograms or feet and pounds with the Units button.
Squirdle-style clues and how Pokedle adds to them
If you have played Squirdle, the tiles will look familiar. Type, generation, height and weight work the same way, with arrows that point toward the answer. Pokedle on Pokepedia adds more to work with.
- Evolution stage, colour and shape tiles give you a second way to narrow the field.
- A Possible answers left counter shows how many Pokemon still match every clue.
- Two hints unlock when you are stuck: a silhouette after 4 guesses and the first letter after 6.
- Hard mode, generation filters and endless guesses are in Unlimited mode.
- You can replay the last 7 daily puzzles as practice.
Daily and unlimited Pokedle
The Daily tab gives everyone the same Pokemon on the same day. Your guesses are saved if you reload the page, and your result counts toward your stats and streak. When you finish, the Share result button copies a grid of coloured squares and arrows with no names in it, so you can post it without spoiling the answer.
If you want more than one puzzle a day, the Unlimited tab works like a Pokedle unlimited mode. Each puzzle is a random Pokemon, and a new one starts as soon as you press New puzzle. Open Settings to pick which generations can come up, turn on hard mode or switch to endless guesses. A player who only wants Kanto can tick Gen 1 and play 151 Pokemon.
Daily is where the Squirdle daily habit lives: one puzzle, one shot at the streak, and a countdown to the next one. Past puzzles and Unlimited never change the streak, so you can practise freely.
Hints, hard mode and endless guesses
After 4 guesses the Show silhouette button unlocks. It shows the hidden Pokemon as a black outline. After 6 guesses you can show the first letter of its name. Using a hint adds a lamp emoji to your share text, so friends can see you had help.
Hard mode removes the colour and shape tiles. Endless removes the 8 guess limit, and the share text shows an infinity sign instead of a total. Both are settings in Unlimited mode only, so the daily puzzle stays the same for everyone.
Pokedle strategy tips
- Open with a Pokemon that has two types and a middle generation. Gen 4 or 5 tells you which way to go on generation with the first arrow.
- Use height and weight to cut the list fast. Pokemon span from the 0.4 m Pikachu to the 14.5 m Wailord, so a single arrow rules out a large share of the list.
- A grey Type 1 with an amber Type 2 means the types are swapped. Guess a Pokemon with the types the other way around.
- Check the Possible answers left number after each guess. A guess that leaves 300 Pokemon is weaker than one that leaves 40.
- Pick a Pokemon from a different stage and colour for your second guess so each tile teaches you something new.
- Heavy and tall Pokemon such as Snorlax make a good second guess when your first arrows both point up.
The Pokemon data behind Pokedle
Every tile comes from the Pokepedia database, the same one behind each Pokedex entry. The game uses 1,025base-form Pokemon. Regional and alternate forms are not separate answers. Heights are in metres and weights in kilograms, as listed on the Pokemon's own page.
If a clue surprises you, open the Pokemon's page and check. The type chartexplains how the 18 types relate, and the random Pokemon generatoris a quick way to meet Pokemon you have not seen in a while.
