Pokemon Gold opens Johto in 1999. The Pokemon Gold Pokedex combines the 100 new Johto species with returning Kanto Pokemon for a 251-entry list. Day and night cycles changed what appeared when. Pokemon breeding debuted here. Ho-Oh waits at Bell Tower. Full Pokemon Gold pokedex below.
About Pokemon Gold
Pokemon Gold opened the Gen 2 era in 1999 (JP) and 2000 (worldwide), introducing Johto and the first major expansion of the Pokemon universe. The Pokemon Gold Pokedex combines the 100 new Johto Pokemon with returning Kanto Pokemon for a 251-entry list. Pokemon Gold added day and night cycles, breeding, held items, and the Dark and Steel types.
Starters in Pokemon Gold
Gold starters are Chikorita (Grass), Cyndaquil (Fire), and Totodile (Water). Ho-Oh is the version legendary in Pokemon Gold and appears on the box art. Celebi is the Mythical tied to the Gold era.
Johto and Kanto in Pokemon Gold
Pokemon Gold's post-game opens up all of Kanto, letting you challenge the original 8 gym leaders again at higher levels. It is the only Pokemon game to include two full regions in one cartridge. Red waits at the top of Mt. Silver as the final optional battle.
Completing the Pokemon Gold Pokedex
A full Pokemon Gold pokedex requires catching all 251 Johto and Kanto Pokemon. Trading with Silver, Crystal, Red, Blue, or Yellow via the Time Capsule is required for version exclusives. Pokemon Gold is the first Pokemon game to have a Shiny Pokemon encounter rate of 1/8192, which still matters to shiny hunters today.
