Pokemon Yellow is the Gen 1 special edition built around the anime. The Pokemon Yellow Pokedex lists every Kanto Pokemon you can encounter, with Pikachu as the forced starter that follows you around the overworld. Team Rocket Brock and Misty battles are tweaked. Jessie and James show up as trainers. Every Yellow-version Pokemon is listed below.
About Pokemon Yellow
Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition was the 1998 and 1999 release that reworked Red and Blue around the anime. Pikachu is your starter and refuses to evolve, following you around the overworld. The Pokemon Yellow Pokedex is still the 151-entry Kanto pokedex, but the availability of Pokemon in the wild is tuned to match the TV show.
Starters in Pokemon Yellow
Your only Pokemon Yellow starter is Pikachu. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are gift Pokemon from NPCs across Kanto at specific points in the story (Officer Jenny gives Squirtle, a trainer on Route 24 gives Bulbasaur, the house in Cerulean gives Charmander).
Jessie and James in Pokemon Yellow
Jessie and James appear as recurring trainer battles in Pokemon Yellow, replacing certain generic Team Rocket grunts. Their teams are tuned to match the anime. Pokemon Yellow's story leans on the anime's beats, including a Bill-saved moment at the lighthouse that's played for humor.
Completing the Pokemon Yellow Pokedex
A complete Pokemon Yellow pokedex is tricky because Yellow skews the wild encounter tables: some Kanto Pokemon like Raichu are impossible to evolve from in-game Pikachu and must be traded in. Trading with Red, Blue, or Gold is still the only way to fill the 151-slot Pokemon Yellow pokedex.
