Trade-only Pokémon
11 Pokémon appear in this Pokédex but cannot be caught in the wild in Red. Trade them from Pokémon Blue to complete your Pokédex.
Pokemon Red is where the whole thing started in 1996. The Pokemon Red Pokedex covers the 151 original Kanto Pokemon minus the Blue version exclusives. You pick Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur as the starter, then grind through eight gyms and the Elite Four. Everything you can catch, evolve, or trade for in Pokemon Red is listed below in Kanto dex order.
About Pokemon Red
Pokemon Red is one of the two original Pokemon games, released in Japan in 1996 and worldwide in 1998 alongside Pokemon Blue. Pokemon Red introduced the Kanto region, the original 151 Pokemon, and every mechanic the series is still built on: gyms, Elite Four, type matchups, version exclusives. The Pokemon Red Pokedex is the Kanto pokedex, with 151 total entries.
Version Exclusives in Pokemon Red
Red has Ekans, Arbok, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Mankey, Primeape, Growlithe, Arcanine, Scyther, Electabuzz. Blue gets Sandshrew, Sandslash, Vulpix, Ninetales, Meowth, Persian, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel, Pinsir, Magmar. You need to trade with a Pokemon Blue cartridge to complete the Red Pokedex.
Starters and Gym Order in Pokemon Red
The three Pokemon Red starters are Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. The Kanto gym order in Red is Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, Erika, Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni. Team Rocket shows up across the story, with Giovanni serving as both Viridian gym leader and Rocket boss.
Completing the Pokemon Red Pokedex
A complete Pokemon Red pokedex requires trading with Blue, Yellow, or any Gen 1 compatible cart to collect both version exclusives and starter lines. Mew was never legitimately catchable in Red without a distribution event or the Mew glitch. Pokemon Red remains the simplest Pokemon game to speedrun and one of the most-played Pokemon titles ever.
