Birds are the biggest animal group in Pokemon. At 85, they outnumber every other animal list on this site, and the next one down is the dinosaurs at 62. A bird can live on any route, so each region adds its own pigeon and its own hawk, and the legends borrow birds too, from the thunderbird to the phoenix. Most of them are easy to find in a field guide, but the games give them habits no real bird has.
Pidgey is the Tiny Bird Pokemon, and despite its name it looks more like a female house sparrow than a pigeon. The black markings around its eyes recall Ra and Horus, the Egyptian sun and sky gods drawn with the heads of falcons. It is very docile, and if attacked, it will often kick up sand to protect itself rather than fight back. Throwing sand and then leaving is a plan we respect. It stands 0.3 m tall.

Pidgeotto is where the line stops looking like a sparrow. Its large size and predatory behavior put it closer to a bird of prey such as an osprey or an eagle, and its red crest is somewhat similar to the crests of cockatoos.
