Pokemon took the largest animal known to have lived and made it the second tallest Pokemon there is. Wailord is the blue whale, and at 14.5 m only Eternatus stands taller. The newest whales left the sea and live on land.
Wailmer, the Ball Whale Pokemon, is based on a baleen whale, the group of whales that strain their food through plates in their mouths, with a bit of beach ball mixed in. The beach ball part shows when it sucks in a large volume of seawater: it becomes like a big, bouncy ball. It eats a ton of food daily. A ton a day makes us feel better about lunch.
It stands 2 m tall and weighs 130 kg. Its Water Veil ability stops it from being burned.

Wailord, the Float Whale Pokemon, is based on the blue whale, the largest known animal ever to exist. It also resembles a submarine, a blimp and a torpedo. At 14.5 m it is the second tallest Pokemon of all, behind only Eternatus, yet it weighs 398 kg, less than Cetitan, a Pokemon less than a third its height.
Its immense size is the reason for its popularity, and Wailord watching is a favorite sightseeing activity in various parts of the world. (Whale watching where the whale is the size of the boat would take a bigger boat and a stronger stomach on our part.)
Its hidden ability, Pressure, makes the opponent's moves use up one extra PP, the limited number of times each move can be used.

Kyogre, the Sea Basin Pokemon, may be a personification of the Earth's oceans. Its feud with Groudon is similar to Leviathan and Behemoth, two creatures who would fight each other to the death at the end of time. Leviathan is tied to the sea, and the Hebrew word for it is now used for whales in Modern Hebrew, which may be why Kyogre draws on toothed whales like the orca. The marks on its fins look like alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet, which may stand for life beginning in the oceans, set against Groudon's omega.
It is the personification of the sea itself, and legends tell of its many clashes with Groudon. Fighting a volcano for control of the planet is a lot, since we fight the thermostat.
Its Drizzle ability summons rain that lasts indefinitely when it enters battle.

Cetoddle, the Terra Whale Pokemon, appears to be based on several Arctic whales. Its shape may come from the bowhead whale, also known as the polar whale, its white color and big head from the beluga, and its single horn from the narwhal. It also appears to be based on toddlers. Its history of leaving the ocean to live on land reverses how real whales evolved, since they started as land animals that moved into the water.
It lives in frigid regions in pods of five or so, and it loves the minerals found in snow and ice. A whale that walks and snacks on snow leaves us with questions for evolution.
Its Thick Fat ability halves the damage it takes from Fire and Ice moves. It stands 1.2 m tall.

Cetitan is based mostly on the right whale. Right whales share its arched mouth, round body with no dorsal fin and torso without grooves, and its horns resemble the callosities, thick patches of hardened skin, on their heads. The North Atlantic right whale's scientific name, Eubalaena glacialis, means true whale of ice, which matches Cetitan's type. Its home, Paldea, is based on the Iberian Peninsula, where whaling of North Atlantic right whales, especially by the Basque people, nearly wiped them out.
It may also come from the Ningen, a large white whale-like creature from modern Japanese folklore said to live in the icy waters around Antarctica. Ice energy builds up in the horn on its upper jaw until the horn reaches cryogenic temperatures and freezes its surroundings. A horn that freezes the room reminds us of a coworker. It stands 4.5 m tall and weighs 700 kg.
Wailord and Cetitan Have 170 HP, Beaten by Only Five Pokemon
Real whales carry their bulk as blubber, and the whale Pokemon carry it as HP. Wailord and Cetitan both have 170 HP, and only five Pokemon in the whole Pokedex have more: Blissey, Chansey, Guzzlord, Regidrago and Wobbuffet. Wailmer starts at 130 and Cetoddle at 108, high numbers for Pokemon that have not evolved yet.
Cetoddle and Cetitan add the Thick Fat ability on top, which halves the damage they take from Fire and Ice moves.
