Oddish is the Weed Pokemon, and it is based on the mandrake, a plant whose roots sometimes look like human figures. Its habit of screaming when yanked out of the ground matches the myth that a mandrake lets out a deadly cry when uprooted. Its round body also resembles onions, radishes and turnips.
It stays in the cold underground during the day to avoid the sun and grows by bathing in moonlight. Its Chlorophyll ability doubles its Speed in strong sunlight, which is an odd talent for something that hides from the sun. An ability is a passive effect that works on its own in battle.
