Type

Category
Spot Panda Pokémon
National Dex
#0327
Debut
Gen III
Base stat total
360

Spinda, the Spot Panda Pokemon, is based on a Qinling panda with some rabbit traits. It also resembles a teddy bear or other stuffed toy. The swirls in its eyes are a cartoon way of showing someone dazed or dizzy, and its staggering steps resemble drunken boxing, a martial arts style that imitates the movements of a drunk person to become unpredictable and elusive.

Each Spinda has a different spot pattern. Its Own Tempo ability prevents confusion, and its Tangled Feet ability doubles its evasion while it is confused. It stands 1.1 m tall and weighs 5 kg.

Pancham

National Dex
#0674
Debut
Gen VI
Base stat total
348

Pancham, the Playful Pokemon, is based on a panda bear cub. Its Shiny coloring could be a reference to the Qinling panda, whose coat tends to be more brown than black.

It evolves into Pangoro after being around Dark-type Pokemon, and it picks up the Dark type itself when it does. That evokes a naughty child being led astray by bad influences into becoming a full-blown delinquent.

It wants to make sure it's taken seriously, so it is always giving others a glare, but if it's not focusing, it ends up smiling. (Trying to look tough and failing. We have the same passport photo.) Its Iron Fist ability strengthens punch-based moves to 1.2× their power. Its Scrappy ability lets its Normal and Fighting moves hit Ghost Pokemon, which are normally immune to both.

#675

Pangoro

Daunting Pokémon
National Dex
#0675
Debut
Gen VI
Base stat total
495

Pangoro, the Daunting Pokemon, is based on a panda bear. Its hot-blooded, belligerent yet virtuous attitude, its coat-like cape and its chewing stick also draw on bancho, the leaders of Japanese juvenile delinquents. Like Pancham, its Shiny coloring could be a nod to the brownish Qinling panda.

It uses its leaf to predict the moves of its opponents, and it strikes with punches that can turn a dump truck into scrap with one hit.

Its Mold Breaker ability lets its moves ignore the target's ability when that ability would block or weaken them. It stands 2.1 m tall and weighs 136 kg.

Two Pokemon Borrow From the Red Panda

Stufful and Bewear are partly based on the red panda, a different animal from the giant panda.

Stufful

Flailing Pokémon
National Dex
#0759
Debut
Gen VII
Base stat total
340

Stufful, the Flailing Pokemon, is partly based on the red panda, as well as stuffed animals such as teddy bears. The white flail under its tail resembles the tags on stuffed animal toys.

Its flailing arms are an adorable sight, but this is flailing that can snap thick tree trunks. Its Fluffy ability halves damage from contact moves (attacks that touch the target) but doubles damage from Fire moves. It stands 0.5 m tall.

#760

Bewear

Strong Arm Pokémon
National Dex
#0760
Debut
Gen VII
Base stat total
500

Bewear, the Strong Arm Pokemon, is partly based on a red panda, and a stuffed bear is the other half. It has some similarities to a mascot costume, it looks like it is wearing an animal-ears headband, and it may take inspiration from the wrestling bears of professional wrestling and from the bear hug, a wrestling move used for submission.

It tucks subdued prey under its arms to carry them to its nest. It stands 2.1 m tall and weighs 135 kg.

The Qinling Panda Shows Up Three Times

Spinda is based on the Qinling panda, a subspecies whose coat tends to be more brown than black. Pancham and Pangoro are black and white, but their Shiny colors are brown, which could be a reference to the same panda.
